Canada Day Sermon

HOMILY: The 150th Anniversary of Confederation, 2 July 2017, by David E. Smith


In 1939, when I was three years of age, for reasons I do not know and now can never discover,
my mother had a phrenologist ‘read’ my head. Whatever else he said, my mother
remembered for some years thereafter a suggestion that I would enter the Church. Twenty
years later, when I was trying to decide what to do with my life, she would periodically
remind me of this prophecy. Ultimately, I chose a university career. Still, in an Oscar Wilde,
Lord Savile’s Crime vein, perhaps this moment, in this place, is the one the Vancouver
phrenologist foresaw nearly four-score years ago....
